Just bought a 2016 GTI and live in Ottawa, Canada. (5dr Autobahn, 6sp, Reflex silver) However, previously owned a 2010 Golf TDI (sold it before the scandal!) and that car was awesome in the snow. I had winter tires (Michelin X-ice2) on steelies for Nov-Mar. Car could plow through 30cm fresh snow fall without a problem.

#1 I'm new to owning a car in a colder climate. Haven't really driven front wheel drive cars in the snow before (only AWD SUVs on ski trips etc..) How do the GTI's handle in the snow on all season tires? I have the stock Bridgestone Potenza All Seasons. I'll be changing those out to Pilot Sports in the summer. GTI isn't better in the snow than any other FWD vehicle. As others have stated it's all about the tires. My mk8 with the stock three-season tires could hardly make it through a flat parking lot covered in snow.
